Quick query re: email pop-up and comments

Update: I’ve now uninstalled the pop-up, as NOT annoying my readers is my number one priority.

Of course if you can recruit a friend or two as a subscriber to make up for it, I’d be hugely grateful! 😉

Apologies for a dull housekeeping post, but a couple of quick queries:

  • I have installed a plug-in – OptInPop – that pops up an email request form over the screen. It should happen to you just once a year, presuming you’ve not set your computer to delete cookies or similar every X hours/days. I’ve had reports from one person that they’re seeing it more than once – even when they come back from an external link. Anyone else seeing this?
  • A valued commenter and fellow blogger said he’s been having trouble leaving comments on the site. Has anyone else? If you have and you can’t comment below for that reason, please email me and let me know at theinvestor[-at-]monevator.com, where [-at-] is replaced by the usual @ email symbol.

While like any blogger I’m keen to find ways to turn new readers into regular readers, such as via the email newsletter pop-up, I really don’t want to annoy anyone with endless pop-ups. So please do let me know if you’re seeing that. (It may be a cache issue, or it may just be happening on that one person’s PC).

Update: The pop-up is likely due to the reader having disabled all cookies in his browser. I’m not sure how one can use the Internet these days if you disable all cookies, but if you do you’re likely to see the pop-up more often than once a year.

If cookies worry you (they don’t worry me at all, but then I use a Mac not a PC so life is sweet) then I think you may be able to allow them only for certain sites. Not sure though.

I’ve only seen the pop-up once, even though I use two different machines to read the site. Cookies don’t worry me too much, I can manage them using Firefox. However, my one thought on seeing the pop-up was ‘Oh no, not another one of my favourite sites with this annoying feature…’

And no problems with posting comments (crosses fingers as mouse hovers over the ‘Submit’ button) 😉

I am using Google Chrome, and i always use it in “incognito” mode, just not to allow websites to write anything on my hard disc. Well, i happen to get that popup everytime i load any page of your otherwise great site. My personal hint: make a box on the home page where you can ask for emails, and forget the popup…
PS: i’ve been reading your site for some months. You are inspiring.

Thanks very much for the info guys. A friend is using this on his blog, which is a similar size to Monevator, and he’s getting a lot of sign-ups out of it. I notice subs here have jumped up another dozen today.

On the other hand, a friend I know (in the real world!) is tearing his hair out of the pop-up, which he says is popping up on his computer as if it’s on a timer.

I think there may be something going on with my caching plug-ins, but I’m not amazingly technically capable. Will have a lock on the pop-up plug-in authors’ site, and if I can’t find a solution I’ll yank it.

I am happy for people to suffer it once a year, or once whenever they delete all their cookies, but not multiple times a day/week/month/three months!

    Hi TI

I’ve just commented on your hedge fund post and I can report absolutely no problems this time.

    Cheers
